RA Minister of Diaspora participated in event dedicated to Toros Toranian’s 90th birth anniversary

On March 27, at the initiative of the RA Ministry of Diaspora and the Union of Writers of Armenia, the Union of Writers of Armenia hosted an event dedicated to the 90th birth anniversary of prose writer, poet and publicist Toros Toranian.

In her welcoming remarks, RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan stated that she knew the great writer and knew about his career since the 1980s. “Being a famous Diaspora Armenian intellectual, Toros Toranian was even popular, as well as loved and accepted in his homeland during the Soviet era in Armenia. I am glad that I pictured the once heavenly Aleppo through the image of Toros Toranian. Toranian was born in Aleppo and came to Armenia to receive a medical education, but he dedicated his life to and pursued his career in healing people’s souls and dedicated himself to the Armenian community and the just solution to the Armenian Cause,” Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan stated.

The Minister also emphasized the fact that the Syrian-Armenian intellectual traveled to Armenian communities of the Diaspora and, as he put it, refused to live “a miserable life”, and he and his extended family settled in Armenia during the last years of his life and enjoyed the love and warmth in the homeland.

Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan granted the Commemorative Medal of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia to Toros Toranian for his pro-national activities in the Diaspora and for his remarkable contributions to the preservation of the Armenian identity and the development of the Armenia-Diaspora partnership.

In his speech, President of the Union of Writers of Armenia Eduard Militonyan stated that, even at 90, the writer/publicist continues to write and make his contributions to the strengthening of bonds between Armenia and the Diaspora.

Deputy Director of the Armenian Representation of the Armenian General Benevolent Union Hovik Yordekyan attached importance to Toros Toranian’s activities as a longstanding member of the Armenian General Benevolent Union and awarded him the Union’s commemorative gift.

This was followed by speeches by Director of Armenian Encyclopedia Publishing House Hovhannes Ayvazyan, as well as well-known literary critics and prose writers. Excerpts of the writer’s works were also read during the event.

Expressing gratitude to the attendees, Toros Toranian stated that the homeland has lied at the core of his life and his literary career and that if he had a chance to be born again, he would like to be born and live only in Armenia.
